Early development of liquid crystal displays

2019-03-13

All along, the pursuit of more perfect visual enjoyment is the goal of our desktop display device. Looking back at the development of technology, we can easily find that it is all around the same theme - "pursuing better human visual comfort"!

As a new product that has suddenly emerged in recent years, liquid crystal displays have completely replaced bulky CRT displays as mainstream display devices. However, the development of liquid crystal displays is not as smooth as we imagined. Below, we will review the hard and tortuous road of LCD development with new and old customers.

Early development of LCD (1986~2001) - excessive cost to inhibit the development of its technology In the early stage of immature technology, LCD is mainly used in electronic watches, calculators and other fields. What we usually call LCD, its English is called Liquid Crystal Display, literally translated into Chinese is liquid crystal display, referred to as liquid crystal display.

Liquid crystal is a substance that is almost completely transparent. Its molecular arrangement determines the path through which light penetrates the liquid crystal. By the 1960s, it was discovered that charging a liquid crystal would change its molecular arrangement, which in turn caused distortion or refraction of light, which led to the idea of inventing liquid crystal display devices.

The world's first liquid crystal display device appeared in the early 1970s and was called the TN-LCD (Twisted Nematic) liquid crystal display. Despite its monochrome display, it has been promoted to electronic watches, calculators and other fields.

Characteristics

Thin body and space saving

Compared with the more cumbersome CRT display, the liquid crystal display requires only one third of the space of the former.

Power saving, no high temperature

It is a low-power product that can be completely non-heated (mainly power and heat are present in the backlight tube or LED), while CRT monitors inevitably generate high temperatures due to imaging technology.

Low radiation, good health

LCD monitors radiate far less than CRT monitors (just low, not completely without radiation, and electronic products have more or less radiation), which is a boon for those who work in front of computers all day long.
